31st August – Malaysia Independence Day
Posted by Genez
Today, all Malaysians commemorate the 52nd year of Malaysia Independence (Merdeka) from he British Colonial Rule.

Back in the year 1957 of this very day, many Asian-faces were present at the Dataran Merdeka (Merdeka Square). Surfing the crowd, you’ll hear whispers of “Merdeka”, “Independence”, “du li”… etc. All of which are different languages, with the united meaning of Independence. When the Merdeka procession commenced. A man was seen to rise amongst the seated Britishmen and Tradesmen. He was Tunku Abdul Rahman Putra Al-Haj, the first Prime Minister of Malaysia. Standing with the Pedestal in clear sight of all who were present, he raised up his right hand sky high, and chanted “MERDEKA!!! MERDEKA!!! MERDEKA!!!”. After each of his “Merdeka” chant, the people echoed right after his chant, together shouting “Merdeka” in unison. After declaring Merdeka, the Malaysian Flag – Jalur Gemilang was raised, flagging proudly in mid air, as a symbol of pride of all who were present.
This day, was the day where all who were present in this land, found their identities of being Malaysians. Despite having different roots from different parts of Asia, the people of Malaysia were proud to be in this new found family — Malaysia. As Malaysians, we are proud and grateful for what our ancestors have contributed towards Malaysian Independence. Always strive to live up to the creator of Malaysia’s dream, which is not to live by race, or religion; but to live harmoniously as Malaysians.
We wish all Selamat Hari Merdeka! (Happy Independence Day)
