Absolutely the MOST anticipated and hyped up movie of the year, Transformers is back with a huge bang. Packing more explosions, more GIANT ROBOTS and more Megan Fox (I bet some of you guys just went to see her.), the sequel promises to be one huge step above the first movie. Picking up 2 years from where the first movie left off, Megatron is back and badder than before, and some new entrants to the battlefield make it all more complex when the fate of the world hangs in the balance.

If anyone needs a refresher, the first movie involved the Allspark, Megatron getting his tush kicked and Sam getting the girl.

With Shia LaBeouf back as the lead Sam Witwicky, Megan Fox reprising her role as Mikaela Banes, as well as most of the cast from the first movie coming back in one capacity or another for Transformers 2. Shia LaBeouf gave a rather average performance as Sam, and the character was rather annoying. Megan Fox as Mikaela was rather good, in fact I felt she had more character than Sam. Ramon Rodriguez and John Turturro as Leo Spitz and Agent Simmons respectively served as the movies comic relief. And the marines? Bad ass as usual :P

Directed by Micheal Bay, there was definitely no shortage of eye candy. You get to see much more of the centerpieces (the Transformers),more explosions, more MASSIVE ROBOT DEATHMATCHES, more explosions, and more explosions. The special effects were top notch, and the Transformers blended into the environment seamlessly. You even had set pieces in the desert with REAL M1 Abrams tanks!

Story wise, it was definitely a letdown. The story was basically an excuse to string along the above said effects into a movie : predictable, but fun nonetheless. Lots of deus ex machina unfortunately. And as expected, the writers conveniently allow some plot holes to be left open for the sequel.

My conclusion? If you suspend your disbelief for that 2 hours 30 mins, you will end up with a very enjoyable action flick. (Who doesn’t love Giant Robots?) I did and I thoroughly enjoyed myself to no end. Just don’t go into the cinema expecting something serious!

Giant robots!

Giant robots!

I give it a 4/5 for entertainment value, otherwise its only 2.5/5.
